It looks as though Spring is here at last with lambs gambolling in the fields and plenty of rain to water the gardens. April saw the release of a number of big cinema hits including I Am Legend, St. Trinians, Alvin & The Chipmunks and The Golden Compass. May continues the run of massive box office successes with titles such as the Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter murder-musical Sweeney Todd which is well deserving of its 18-certificate and has a brilliant supporting cast that includes Alan Rickman, Sacha Baron Cohen and the excellent Timothy Spall.
Then we have the excellent drama Charlie Wilson’s War starring Tom Hanks, Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Julia Roberts and the horror sequel Alien Vs Predator – Requiem. May sees the release of the romantic comedy P.S. I Love You starring Hilary Swank and Gerard Butler (if you enjoyed Ghost, you’ll love this one) and the cracking thriller In The Valley Of Elah featuring a very strong cast that includes Tommy Lee Jones (soon to be seen in the excellent No Country For Old Men), Charlize Theron, Susan Sarandon and Josh Brolin.
That superb actor Phillip Seymour Hoffman stars in no less than three films this month, the aforementioned Charlie Wilson’s War plus Before The Devil Knows You’re Dead – recommended to all thriller lovers and co-starring Ethan Hawke, Marisa Tomei and Albert Finney – and the drama The Savages in which he co-stars with Laura Linney.
Comedies are well represented by Over Her Dead Body with Eva Longoria Parker, Paul Rudd and Jason Biggs plus Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story starring John C Reilly and Jenna Fischer and the romantic comedy Suburban Girl with Sarah Michelle Gellar and Alec Baldwin.
We also have the very successful fantasy romance Penelope with Christina Ricc and James McAvoy and the excellent family film Mr Magorium’s Wonder Emporium starring Dustin Hoffman, Natalie Portman and Jason Bateman.
Chiller fans will appreciate Wind Chill with Emily Blunt and Ashton Holmes plus titles such as Abandoned, Backwoods and Already Dead while we would point drama fans in the direction of the Richard Attenborough directed Closing The Ring with Christopher Plummer and Shirley MacLaine and the critically acclaimed Four Months, Three Weeks, Two Days, a Romanian film that won the Palme d’Or at The 2007 Cannes Film Festival.
As well as Mr Magorium our younger members will thoroughly enjoy The Bee Movie, a very colourful animated feature that features the antics of the very busy Barry B Benson and his honey bee friends.
With over 25 titles being added yet again this month there is certainly no shortage of movie entertainment for you to watch and the Coming Soon page gives you a flavour of some of the terrific titles due in the next couple of months.
Buying
a DVD player
Many
of you will be considering purchasing a DVD. Great idea,
as the picture and sound quality is infinitely superior to video. However,
we would caution you that not all DVD movies will play properly on a budget
priced machine (£150 or less). We would advise you to consider quality
makes such as Sony, Sanyo, JVC, etc, to get the best results from the
hundreds of titles that we have for rental.
DVD
Look
out for the spinning disk on the left which denotes that a film is also
available in DVD format. We
have the largest selection of rental DVD's anywhere in Bexhill.
Most releases are available on both DVD and video and the rental charges are the same for both formats
