It is quite some time since we had a genuine war drama and this offering from Russian director Fyodor Bondarchek is certainly one of the best for years. Based on real events during the Soviet Union’s occupation of Afghanistan in the late 1980’s, 9th Company focuses on a small group of soldiers who were constantly tasked with the most difficult situations in the conflict, culminating in the Battle of Djardan Heights.
Powerful, gritty and hard hitting with some epic battle scenes, this is a war film in the style of Platoon that doesn’t hesitate to show the brutality of war.
