Without question 300 is one of the most eagerly awaited films of the year so far. Adapted from Frank Miller’s graphic novel the film tells the story of one of the best known battles in history where 300 Spartans take on the might of the Persian army.
In 480BC Emperor Xerxes, played by Rodrigo Santoro, marches on Greece with his army of some 200,000 men.
The Spartan king, Leonides (Gerard Butler) is forbidden by custom and religious beliefs from mustering an army to defend his country so marches a force of 300 of his best warriors to the narrow strait of Thermopylae to delay the vast invading force.
The film is a visual feast with some terrific battle scenes and plenty of sex and violence and stars Lena Headey as Queen Gorgo who matches her warrior husband in determination as well as fighting spirit.
