This stunning crime thriller is based on the true life story of Frank Lucas, immaculately played by
Denzel Washington (Déjà Vu), a 70’s crime lord from Harlem, New York.
Having built his crime empire, Lucas decided to take on the might of the Mafia by importing uncut heroin from Thailand via Viet Nam and then selling it cheaper.
Clever, slick and extremely likeable Lucas finds himself up against not only the Mafia but also narcotics agent Detective Richie Roberts, played by Russell Crowe.
Roberts is the one clean cop in the district and he is determined to put Lucas behind bars and stem the tide of misery that the drugs trade is inflicting. Crowe is superb as the dogged, methodical cop and the film, helmed by triple Academy Award winner Ridley Scott, bears a striking resemblance to the majestic Heat.
Tense, stylish and extremely watchable, this is a terrific thriller.
