This has been a terrific year for westerns so far and this is a beautifully crafted example of fine film making and excellent acting.
Everyone knows the story of outlaw Jesse James, so it takes a very special performance by the actors to hold the audience for over two hours. The last film to achieve this was Apollo 13, another riveting drama based upon true events.
Both Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck are superb in the lead roles, Pitt playing the legendary Jesse James, a man only too aware that death is lurking around the corner but unsure from which direction it will come. And Affleck is excellent as the 19-year old Robert Ford, a fringe member of the James gang who is determined to establish his own place in history.
Intelligent, absorbing and captivating this is drama of the highest quality.
